Cheaper checks without finance

Most providers also sell a cheaper check that leaves something out, usually the outstanding finance check:

  • Car Control Basic, £3.99: full mileage analysis, MOT history, valuation and factory specification. No finance, write-off or stolen check.
  • Total Car Check Silver, £3.99: includes the write-off check.
  • MyCarCheck Basic, £4.99: stolen, write-off and export checks, no finance.
  • RAC Basic Check, £9.98 and HPI Basic Check, £9.99: fewer details than the full checks.

If you're buying from a private seller or a small trader, the finance check is the one that matters most: a car with money still owed on it can be repossessed by the lender, even after you've paid for it.

What the extra money buys: the data guarantee

Most of the more expensive checks include a data guarantee, usually up to £30,000. If the check said the car was clear and that turns out to be wrong, the provider pays your financial loss, under its own terms and conditions.

Car Control doesn't include a data guarantee, which is part of why the Premium report costs £6.99. For an everyday used car, many buyers are happy with the records alone. If you're spending a lot of money on one car, a check with a guarantee can be worth the extra.

Which check costs least?

  • One car: of the nine providers in the table, DealerPricing is the cheapest for one full check at £3.99, then CarCostCheck at £4.99 and Car Control Premium at £6.99, followed by MyCarCheck at £8.49. The Car Control report also includes a full mileage and MOT analysis, valuation and factory specification, with a free preview first.
  • Three cars: MyCarCheck's 3 for £12.49 is the lowest multi-car price we compared, and Car Control's 3 Premium reports are £12.99, about £4.33 each. We didn't compare multi-car prices for DealerPricing or CarCostCheck.
  • Five cars: MyCarCheck, Total Car Check and Motorcheck all sell 5 full checks for £19.99.

How we compared

We last checked each provider's website on 26 October 2026 and took the price of a single full check that includes outstanding finance, write-off and stolen records, plus any multi-car price shown. We left out providers whose prices we couldn't see without starting an order. Car Control is one of the providers in the table, and isn't affiliated with any of the others. Questions buyers ask

How much is a car history check in the UK?

A full check with outstanding finance, write-off and stolen records cost between £3.99 and £19.99 at the nine providers we compared on 26 October 2026. DealerPricing was £3.99, CarCostCheck £4.99, Car Control Premium £6.99, MyCarCheck £8.49, Total Car Check and Motorcheck £9.99, the AA and RAC £14.99, and HPI Check £19.99.

What is the cheapest full car check?

Of the nine providers we compared on 26 October 2026, DealerPricing had the lowest price for one full check, at £3.99, followed by CarCostCheck at £4.99 and Car Control Premium at £6.99. For three cars, MyCarCheck's 3 for £12.49 was the lowest multi-car price we compared, just under Car Control's 3 Premium reports at £12.99.

Is an HPI check the same as a car history check?

People often say "HPI check" for any car history check. HPI Check is one provider. Other providers check the same kinds of records: outstanding finance, insurance write-offs and stolen status.

Is a £30,000 data guarantee worth paying for?

It pays out only if the check was wrong and you lost money because of it, under the provider's terms. For an expensive car it can be worth the extra cost. Car Control doesn't include a guarantee, which keeps the Premium report at £6.99.

Can I check a car's history for free?

Partly. MOT history and the mileage recorded at each test are free on GOV.UK. Outstanding finance, write-off and stolen records aren't public, so they need a paid check.
