How many previous owners has a car had?

The V5C logbook shows the number of previous registered keepers, and a car history check shows it from the registration alone. DVLA won't give buyers the previous owners' names.

Letters and numbers from the number plate. Spaces don't matter.

Car Control's Premium check costs £6.99, including VAT, and shows the number of previous keepers and the dates of keeper changes, plus outstanding finance, insurance write-off and stolen records, and mileage and MOT history. It is a one-off payment with no subscription, and the preview is free.

How do I find out how many owners a car has had?

There are two ways. The V5C logbook lists the number of previous registered keepers, so ask the seller to show it to you. Or run a car history check on the registration, which shows the number of previous keepers without needing the logbook. Car Control's Premium report includes it, along with plate changes and colour changes.

Can I find out who the previous owners were?

Not from DVLA. It only gives out a registered keeper's details to people with a "reasonable cause", using form V888. GOV.UK's examples include finding out who was responsible for an accident, tracing the keeper of an abandoned vehicle and tracing people suspected of insurance fraud. Wanting to buy a car isn't one of them. Source: GOV.UK, request information from DVLA.

The service history often shows where the car was serviced, and the seller can tell you how long they've owned it. Ask them.

Does the number of previous owners matter?

It's one clue, not a verdict. A car with fewer keepers is often easier to trace and may have been looked after more consistently. Many keepers in a short time can be a reason to ask why the car keeps being sold. Mileage, MOT history, service records and the car's condition usually tell you more than the number of owners on its own.

  • Check the mileage too: a car with several owners and readings that go backwards is a bigger concern. See the mileage check guide.
  • Check for plate changes: a private plate transfer is normal, but it can also hide a car's past. A history check shows plate changes.
  • Check the logbook matches the seller: the registered keeper on the V5C should normally be the person selling the car.

Questions buyers ask

How can I see how many owners a car has had?

Look at the V5C logbook, which lists the number of previous registered keepers, or run a car history check on the registration. A history check shows the number of keepers without needing the logbook.

Can I check previous owners of a car for free?

The free way is to ask the seller to show you the V5C logbook, which lists the number of previous keepers. Online, the number of keepers comes with a paid history check. GOV.UK's free services show MOT and tax details but not keepers.

Can DVLA tell me who owned my car before?

DVLA only releases a keeper's details to people with a reasonable cause, such as tracing who was responsible for an accident, using form V888. A buyer's curiosity isn't a reasonable cause.

Is a car with lots of previous owners bad?

Not always. Some cars pass through several careful owners. Many keepers in a short time is worth asking about, and the mileage, MOT history and service record usually tell you more than the number of owners.
